AERENA
Redesigning a fragmented DevOps super-app into a scalable multi-product suite for airlines and partners — deployed on Discover Airlines' A320 aircraft.
Context
AERENA was a pioneering concept with no industry equivalents, starting as nine standalone applications grouped into a single super-app experience.
As the product portfolio grew, the original structure quickly became a ceiling.
Key Challenge
UX audit and testing confirmed three structural problems that couldn't be patched — only redesigned:
- Single entry point for all roles: Users with different goals forced into the same starting flow.
- Fragmented authentication: Each product required separate sign-in, breaking platform continuity.
- No centralised administration: Access and organisation management lived outside the platform.
My Role & Approach
As the sole designer with three years of sustained ownership, I treated this as an architecture problem before a design problem:
- Ecosystem Audit: Mapped nine products against user roles and tasks to surface structural friction.
- Architecture Design: Replaced the super-app with a modular suite — independent entry points, unified by shared navigation and account management.
- Design System: Established shared layout, navigation patterns, and interaction rules.
Design & Solution
Each product was given its own direct entry point, connected through a globally fixed navigation layer:
- AERENA Home: Central portal with per-product access and customisable KPI dashboards.
- Unified Navigation: Role-based global components — users only see permitted products.
- Account Management: SSO, organisation administration, and role assignment across all products.
- Scalable Foundation: New products and integrations can be introduced without restructuring.
Outcome & Impact
Deployed on Discover Airlines' A320 aircraft, marking the industry's first operational rollout of a modular suite designed from zero, without an existing blueprint.
Airlines can now manage, test, and deploy across the suite without needing to restructure the system for every new feature.
